Cameroon: Iya Mohamed Slammed 15 Years Jail Term

The former General Manager of the Cameroon Cotton Development Corporation (SODECOTON) Iya Mohamed was sentenced to 15 years in Prison on Thursday, September 3, by the Special criminal Court in Yaoundé, which found him and co-accused guilty of embezzling FCFA 12.180 billion.

Mr Iya, who was also president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) and his former colleagues at SODECOTON, Lucien Fotso (accountant) Pierre Kaptene (executive assistant)  Mahamat Karagama (sales director)Christophe Mbaiougam, another senior official of the enterprise and Jerome Minlend, CEO of Cameroon Audit Consulting firm (CAC) were each slammed a 15 years prison term.

During Thursday’s deliberation, Abdou Yap president of the Special Criminal Court said the court had found Mr Iya Mohamed guilty of the embezzlement charges levied against him. Two of the accused, Mahamat Karagama absent in court, and Christophe Mbaiougam, on the run, were sentenced to life imprisonment.

“These three defendants are expected to jointly pay the sum of 12.180 billion francs as indemnity to SODECOTON.”  said Mr Yap.

According to André Marie Owono, a SODECOTON official, the judgment of the court should be given a benefit of doubt. “The pronouncement does not surprise me. The allegations were serious enough to be punished, “he went on.

Besides, other accused persons Fotso Lucien Henri, Pierre Jérôme and Kaptene Minlend who had been hitherto accused of misappropriating FCFA 11.293 billion, were declared not culpable for lack of evidence to prove the accusation.

Five complaints were levied against the main accused person,Iya Mohamed and a dozen of his employees to the Special Criminal Court. These included the undue payment of wage benefits, oil inventory losses, illegal spending towards Coton Sport football club amongst others.
